On Friday, 9/13/2019, at approximately 1:53 AM, Central Berks Regional Police Department officers were dispatched to the Dollar Tree at 2550 Perkiomen Avenue in Mount Penn Borough for a report of a burglary in progress. A nearby resident had called and stated that they heard glass breaking and observed a male leaving the store on foot walking towards South 26th Street. CBRPD Officer Mayer arrived in the area along with assisting Exeter Township PD officers and observed two Hispanic males walking in the 2500 block of Fairview Avenue (directly to the rear of the shopping center) carrying an item believed to be stolen from the store. As Officer Mayer exited his vehicle to approach these two males, they ran between two homes in the 2500 block of Fairview Avenue towards the rear of the shopping center. Officer Mayer notified Officer White, who was in front of the Dollar Tree, that the males were running towards him. The males encountered a fence that separates the properties on Fairview Avenue from the shopping center. The fence is on top of a 25-30 foot tall concrete retaining wall. The suspects jumped over the fence and fell to the bottom of the wall, directly behind the Dollar Tree, where they were taken in to custody by Officer White. The suspects were identified as Benito Quintero-Arroyo, 45, of Reading and Juan Sanchez-De La Cruz, 40, of Reading. Both suspects were transported to Reading Hospital for treatment of their injuries sustained in the fall. Sanchez-De La Cruz was released from the hospital with minor injuries. Quintero-Arroyo sustained more serious injuries and remained in Reading Hospital. Both males were charged with Burglary, Criminal Trespass, Theft, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Conspiracy, and Quintero-Arroyo had one additional charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Both males have been arraigned and they were both remanded to Berks County Prison on $50,000 bail each.
