On Wednesday November 18th, 2020 the Douglass Township Police Department was dispatched a phone assignment to contact a resident regarding attempted fraud via a phone call scam. The resident stated that they received a phone call from what sounded like their distressed son. He was screaming that he was involved in a DUI crash and needed their help. He was then cut off and they supposedly spoke with a Lawyer named Joseph Gonzo. Gonzo stated that their son was in a lot of trouble. He told them that their son's bail was set at $45,000. He told them that they needed to send $8,000.00 cash via FEDEX immediately if they wanted their son out of jail. The resident hung up the phone and called someone else who instructed them that they needed to call the police department right away. No money was sent during this incident.
We would like to remind our residents to be aware of this scam and the many others that are going around. Please do not give any information over the phone. Especially to people that you DO NOT know. If you receive any sort of suspicious call please contact the Douglass Township Police Department at (610)367-9474.
