CIVILIAN LIFE SAVING AWARDS

The Township of Spring Police Department presented their 2018 Civilian Life Saving Awards last evening at the Township Board of Supervisor's Meeting.  Receiving the Civilian Life Saving Awards were 9-year old Aidyn Schmutz, Dr. Patti Brown, Teresa Wexler, Dr. Paul LaFata, and Teresa Fries.

Receiving his award from Chief Bryan Ross, Aidyn Schmutz had discovered his mother suffering from a medical emergency on November 25th, 2018.  He quickly dialed 911 and provided very important information to the dispatcher until emergency personnel and the police arrived on scene.  His actions were very important and contributed greatly to his mother's recovery.

Chief Ross also presented awards to Dr. Patti Brown, Teresa Wexler, and Dr. Paul LaFata, who on December 22nd, 2018 happened to be shopping at the Giant Food Store (Spring Towne Center) when 61-year-old Fabien Ortelli suffered a major heart attack inside the store.  The three provided emergency care and CPR to Mr. Ortelli until emergency personnel arrived on scene.  Due to their quick and courageous actions for a complete stranger, Mr. Ortelli survived his medical emergency and was able to attend the ceremony with his heroes.

Also receiving an award, but not able to be present, was Teresa Fries.  Fries, a U.S. Postal Worker, was on her route on February 28th, 2018 when she observed an elderly male fall and strike his head in the 600 block of Old Fritztown Road.  Ms. Fries quickly ran to his aid and yelled for someone to call 911.  Ms. Fries provided emergency CPR on the male until the police officers arrived and were able to administer a shock from their AED.  The elderly male was taken to the hospital and subsequently recovered from his medical emergency.

The Township of Spring Police Department applauds the actions of these individuals, who in a time of emergency brought forth their very best to assist another person in need.  These actions demonstrate the importance of being familiar with First Aid, CPR, and other emergency procedures that could save another person's life, or even your own life.
