On 8/5/2018 at 1010 hours the West Reading Police Department was called to the Reading Hospital Emergency Department for a report of a male patient that had assaulted a security guard. Officers arrived on location and assisted security with placing the male patient, later identified as Peter BUDWASH, into four point restraints. BUDWASH was at the hospital to receive treatment for unknown conditions. He was attempting to leave the hospital against medical advise when security explained that he needed to see a doctor before leaving. BUDWASH allegedly shoved the security guard hard enough that the guard lost his footing and fell back into a wall. Other security officers were able to restrain BUDWASH and place him in the bed and then in the restraints.
It was also learned that BUDWASH had several open warrants from other police departments in the county and he is also on probation. These warrants were confirmed and after being treated at the hospital, he was released into police custody. He was then taken to the sheriff's Central Processing Center for booking and processing on the open warrants. He was charged by the West Reading Police Department for Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, & Harassment for the incident that occurred at the hospital. Bail was set at $500,000 and he was committed to the Berks County Jail.
