On June 23, 2022 at approximately 8:30 AM, a WRPD Officer was dispatched to a report of a theft of a motor vehicle. The vehicle was found to have been stolen from a known victim while parked at a business located in the 500 block of Penn Avenue. A WRPD Officer responded and initiated an investigation. A WRPD Criminal Investigator heard the dispatch and assisted with the investigation as well. Surveillance video of the incident was gathered and the video, witness statements and investigation revealed that a male, identified as Lorenzo MERCED-MELENDEZ, stole the vehicle without the owner's knowledge and/or permission. A short time later, a WRPD Officer located the stolen vehicle in Reading City and found MERCED-MELENDEZ actively attempting to take the license plate from the stolen vehicle with a screwdriver. MERCED-MELENDEZ was taken into custody by the Officer and brought back to the WRPD for questioning. MERCED-MELENDEZ admitted stealing the vehicle. MERCED-MELENDEZ was then transported, charged and arraigned for the listed charges filed before the District Justice.
