Dear Citizens,
This is a reminder about the importance of respecting Handicap Parking spaces within our community. These spaces are designated for individuals who have mobility impairments and require closer access to buildings and services. The proper use of these spaces is not only a matter of courtesy but also of law. Please take note of the following guidelines:
1. Handicap Parking Spaces are Reserved for Authorized Vehicles
- Only vehicles displaying a valid handicap parking permit or license plate are authorized to park in designated Handicap Parking spaces.
- A handicap permit or plate must be properly displayed at all times while parked in these spaces.
- The vehicle must be actively transporting a person with a disability to qualify for parking in these spaces.
2. Unauthorized Parking Is a Violation
- Parking in a handicap space without a valid permit or license plate is a violation and may result in a parking ticket and possible towing of your vehicle.
- Vehicles that block access to these spaces or obstruct ramps and pathways for people with disabilities will also be ticketed.
3. Abuse of Handicapped Parking Permits
- It is illegal to use a handicap permit or plate if the person with the disability is not present in the vehicle.
- Misuse of a handicap permit, such as using it when not transporting a person with a disability, will lead to penalties, including fines and possible revocation of the permit.
4. Respect and Consideration
- Do not park in spaces marked for "Van Accessible" unless your vehicle is equipped to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device.
- Never park in access aisles — the striped area next to a handicap space is for individuals to safely load and unload mobility devices.
5. Reporting Violations
If you observe an abuse of handicap parking spaces, please report it to the local police department by calling the non-emergency number 610-655-4911.
By respecting these spaces, we are supporting our fellow citizens who rely on them for their daily needs. Let's work together to ensure that those who need these spaces have full and fair access.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to making our community accessible for everyone.
Sincerely,
John G. Phillips
Chief of Police
