The West Reading Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit serves the citizens as the primary investigative unit for all major case incidents occurring within the Borough.
The cases include but are not limited to homicide, rape, robbery, arson, fraud, and violations of drug laws.
The members of the Criminal Investigation Unit consist of a full-time criminal investigator and a second full-time officer who is part of the patrol unit and is temporarily assigned to the criminal investigations unit.
The investigators are some of the most experienced officers in the department who receive an extensive amount of training in the area of criminal investigations. The West Reading Police Department Criminal Investigations unit is responsible for the follow up investigations of crimes. As such, they use a variety of investigative tools. This includes the use of forensic evidence, search warrants, court orders, and the polygraph in addition to the use of shared police intelligence with other departments.
The unit is one of the busiest in the county and it works closely with other investigative agencies at the Federal, State and Local levels in the investigation of criminal activity and the prosecution of criminal offenders.
The investigators are cross designated as a Berks County Detectives by District Attorney John Adams. This enables the investigators to work on cases that may go outside the boundaries of West Reading Borough and into other municipalities within Berks County.
The Investigators in the unit are also assigned to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office major Crimes Task Force and Drug Task Force. As part of the task forces, they can assist either County Detectives or another municipal agency’s detectives with investigations.
In addition, the unit’s mission is to provide a professional full service criminal investigative body to ensure the thorough and complete investigation of all criminal matters.
